Robert Louis, MD specializes in Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty in Orange County

Robert Louis,MD, your Orange County Neurosurgeon, specializes in Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty in the treatment of degenerative disc disease. Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that reconstructs and replaces degenerated joints. Degenerative disc disease remains one of the leading causes of pain and disability in adults in America.

Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty involves inserting artificial disc into the intervertebral space after a damaged natural cervical or lumbar disc has been removed. Artificial disc is a prosthetic device designed to maintain motion in the treated vertebral segment. It functions like a joint and allows flexion, extension, side bending and rotation. Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty helps relieve pain by maintaining motion and keeps adjacent joints from further degeneration.

Benefits of Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty

    Minimal incision
    Minimal scarring
    Reduces pain
    Fast recovery time
    Less activity restrictions
    Prevents degeneration of adjacent joints
    Improves quality of life

Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty Procedure

Cervical and Lumbar Spine Arthroplasty procedure uses an anterior (from the front) approach to access the spine and expose the space, restoring prior normal disc height to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.

Using fluoroscopy, artificial disc device is implanted into the prepared disc space using special instruments. The artificial disc provides motion like a normal disc and also acts like shock absorber in the spine. Patient typically can go home within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. The affected disc, impinging disc fragments or bone spurs are surgically removed through a small incision.

Types of Artificial Discs

Metal Endplates Artifical Joint– Metal endplates with low friction polymer/plastic to allow for motion between the polished metal surface and the polymer at the disc space.
Metal-on-Metal Artificial Joint– Metal-on-metal artificial joint is designed to replicate normal motion at the disc space.
